Chapter 11 - THE SHADOW BOARD|

Three weeks passed.

The news of Beckett Hail’s arrest and the collapse of Hail Development dominated the business headlines.

Inside a quiet private room at Mount Sinai Hospital, Imara lay in a high-backed bed, watching the soft winter sunlight filter through the blinds.

Roa sat beside her, reviewing a thick stack of finalized court documents.

"Beck's board of directors officially ousted him as CEO yesterday," Roa reported softly. "They're filing for corporate bankruptcy by Friday. His personal assets are being liquidated to cover the bank guarantees."

Imara stroked her belly. "And his criminal trial?"

"He posted a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bail," Roa said. "He’s staying at a small hotel near the airport. He has a electronic ankle monitor and can't come within a mile of you or Cassian."

Imara closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "It feels surreal, Roa. Six weeks ago, I was terrified to leave my own house."

"You built your own exit ramp, Imara," Roa smiled, setting down her pen. "You just had to wait for the right moment to trigger it."

Suddenly, a dull ache tightened across Imara’s lower abdomen. She gasped softly, her hand pressing hard into her side.

"Imara?" Roa sat up immediately. "What's wrong?"

"The baby..." Imara whispered, her breathing turning fast and shallow. "Roa... something's wrong."

Roa leaped to her feet and slammed her hand against the emergency nurse call button.

"Nurse! We need a doctor in here now!" Roa shouted into the hallway.

The monitor beside the bed began to chime in sharp, rhythmic warnings. Imara’s blood pressure was spiking rapidly.
