Chapter 8 - The Long Walk Out

I held my mother’s pearls tightly in my fist, feeling the familiar, smooth weight of them against my palm. I looked down at my daughter. Ellie was standing tall, holding the microphone loosely at her side, watching me with a fierce, protective pride that broke my heart and stitched it back together all at once.
I reached out and took her hand.
“Let’s go, sweetheart,” I said softly.
We didn't look back at Daniel. We didn't wait to hear whatever pathetic, groveling excuse he was going to offer the room of horrified investors. We walked down the stairs of the stage and headed straight down the center aisle of the ballroom.
As we walked, the whispers of the crowd swelled into a loud, undeniable hum of condemnation. I heard the president of our largest supply company mutter, “Absolutely despicable,” to his wife. I saw the chief loan officer for our primary bank aggressively typing on his phone, no doubt sending an emergency email to freeze the company’s credit lines. Daniel hadn't just destroyed our marriage tonight; he had completely annihilated his professional reputation.
We pushed through the heavy, brass-studded doors of the ballroom and stepped out into the cool, quiet lobby of the hotel. The silence was a jarring contrast to the chaos we had just left behind.
I didn't stop until we reached the valet stand outside. The cold Chicago wind hit my face, biting and sharp, but it felt incredibly cleansing. I handed my ticket to the attendant, my hands surprisingly steady.
I knelt down on the concrete pavement, completely ignoring the fact that I was ruining the hem of my expensive gown. I pulled Ellie into a crushing, desperate hug. I buried my face in her shoulder, finally letting the first few tears fall.

“I’m sorry, Mom,” Ellie whispered, hugging me back tightly. “I didn't want to hurt you. But I couldn't let him get away with it.”
“You didn't hurt me, baby,” I wept, pulling back to look at her brave, beautiful face. “You saved me. Grandma would be so incredibly proud of you.”
