Chapter 6 - The Hidden Truth

The video didn't start with a corporate logo or a sweeping drone shot of a real estate development. It started with a high-definition, wide-angle view of our master bedroom. It was security camera footage.
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. My hands flew to my mouth. We didn't have cameras inside the house. Or at least, I didn't think we did. Ellie had installed a hidden nanny-cam on my dresser weeks ago, right next to my jewelry box.
The timestamp in the corner of the screen read exactly two weeks prior.
On the massive screen, a twenty-foot-tall Daniel walked into our bedroom. He was wearing his work suit, whistling a cheerful tune. He walked directly to my antique jewelry armoire, opened the top drawer, and pulled out my mother’s velvet box.
The audio kicked in, crisp and undeniable.
“Are you sure she won't notice?” a woman’s voice asked from off-camera.
A moment later, Lauren walked into the frame. She was wearing my silk bathrobe. She stepped up behind my husband, wrapping her arms around his waist.
“She won't notice a thing, babe,” Daniel’s voice boomed through the gala’s surround-sound system. “I told her I was taking them to the jeweler to be cleaned. She’s so clueless she actually thanked me for it. They look much better on you anyway.”
On the screen, Daniel unclasped the pearls and draped them around Lauren’s neck. He turned around, pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss.
In the ballroom, absolute pandemonium erupted.
Three hundred guests erupted into shouts, gasps, and furious whispers. Investors dropped their forks. Wives of city officials covered their mouths in sheer horror. The illusion of the perfect, trustworthy family man had just been incinerated in front of the most important people in his professional life.

On stage, Daniel’s face drained of all color, turning a sickly, ashen gray. He looked like he was about to vomit. Lauren let out a high-pitched shriek of terror, covering her face with her hands, desperately trying to hide from the blinding spotlight.
Ellie stood perfectly still, holding the microphone. She looked at her father, her young face carved from absolute ice.
