Chapter 20 - The Secret Key

The gala was a triumphant success, but the past has a strange habit of leaving echoes behind.
A week later, I decided it was finally time to clear out the last remnants of Daniel’s presence in the house. I had avoided his small, detached home office above the garage, using it merely as a storage room for old files.
I spent hours shredding outdated blueprints and tossing old vendor catalogs into heavy trash bags. As I was emptying the bottom drawer of his heavy oak desk, a loose wooden panel shifted.
I frowned, kneeling on the floor to inspect the drawer. I tapped the wood. It sounded hollow.
Using a letter opener, I gently pried the false bottom away. Beneath the wood lay a dusty, sealed manila envelope and a small, heavy iron key that looked incredibly old, completely unlike any modern lock in our home.
My heart gave a strange, erratic flutter. I pulled the envelope out, my fingers trembling slightly as I broke the seal.
Inside was a stack of faded photographs and a single, handwritten ledger. The photographs weren't of Lauren, or any other mistress. They were pictures of properties—abandoned warehouses, empty lots in the city's industrial district, and a crumbling, historic bank building downtown.
I opened the ledger. The dates went back nearly fifteen years. The pages were filled with detailed, meticulous records of cash deposits, offshore routing numbers, and a list of names that made my blood run cold. They were names of city inspectors, zoning officials, and local politicians. Next to each name were staggering amounts of money.
Daniel wasn't just embezzling to buy his mistress expensive dresses. He had been running a massive, systematic bribery and money-laundering ring through the company’s earliest subsidiary accounts—accounts I had never audited because they predated my deep involvement in the finances.
I picked up the heavy iron key, turning it over in my palm. Attached to it was a small, faded tag with a single word written in Daniel’s messy handwriting: Vault 4.

I stared at the ledger, the photographs, and the key, the terrifying realization washing over me. Daniel had signed away the company so easily not just because he was afraid of an embezzlement charge, but because he was terrified I would dig deeper and uncover this.
I held the key tightly in my fist, staring out the window at the dark, quiet driveway. The empire I had just claimed was built on a foundation of secrets much darker than a simple affair. And now, I held the key to all of them.
