Chapter 4 - The Approach

|

Before I could demand an explanation, Daniel’s voice boomed through the ballroom speakers. He tapped the microphone twice, waiting for the applause to die down before flashing his signature, winning smile.

“Thank you,” Daniel said, his voice dripping with faux emotion. “Twenty years ago, I started this company with nothing but a rusted pickup truck, a rusty toolbox, and a dream.”

I felt physically sick. He started it with my life savings. I remembered sobbing at a pawn shop counter, selling my grandmother’s engagement bracelet just so we could make our very first payroll and avoid being sued by a subcontractor. Daniel conveniently left that part out of his triumphant narrative.

Daniel turned slightly, smiling warmly toward Lauren. “And tonight, looking back at how far we've come, I'd like to recognize someone who has truly reminded me what it means to believe in the future. Someone who works tirelessly behind the scenes.”

Lauren lowered her eyes, blushing perfectly on cue, pretending to be overwhelmed by the unexpected praise. It was a flawless, sickening performance.

My daughter stood up so suddenly that her heavy wooden chair scraped violently against the marble floor, drawing the eyes of the guests at the neighboring tables.

“Ellie, sit down,” I hissed, terrified of the public spectacle that was about to unfold.

She didn't listen. “Five minutes, Mom,” she repeated softly.

Then, my thirteen-year-old daughter turned and walked purposefully across the crowded ballroom, heading straight toward the stage. I wanted to leap up and pull her back, but I was entirely paralyzed by the sheer audacity of her movements. I watched as she bypassed the head table and approached the event’s audiovisual coordinator, a stressed-looking woman standing behind a massive soundboard near the presentation screen.

The coordinator recognized Ellie immediately; she had babysat her during corporate retreats years ago. They spoke for several brief, urgent seconds. Ellie opened her silver bag and handed her phone to the woman. I watched the coordinator’s expression shift from polite confusion, to absolute shock, and finally, to grim determination. She took a cable from the soundboard and plugged it directly into Ellie’s phone.
