Chapter 15 - The Mistress Packs Her Bags

|

“You’re crazy,” Daniel snarled, stepping aggressively toward me. The security guards instantly stepped forward, placing themselves between us, their hands resting ominously on their belts.

Daniel stopped, glaring at me with a mixture of hatred and sheer panic. “You think you can run this company without me? The clients trust me! They know my face!”

“The clients are currently canceling their contracts because your face is a liability,” I corrected him smoothly. “I spent the last two days reviewing the books, Daniel. I know about the apartment. I know about the 'client entertainment' expenses you used to buy your mistress designer gowns. You’re lucky I’m firing you instead of calling the FBI.”

All the fight instantly drained out of him. He collapsed into his desk chair, burying his face in his hands, finally realizing the absolute magnitude of his ruin.

I turned on my heel and walked out of his office, leaving him to pack his pathetic box of belongings. I had one more stop to make.

I walked down the hall to the executive assistant's desk.

Lauren was frantically throwing office supplies, picture frames, and personal files into a cardboard box. She looked terrified, her eyes darting nervously toward the elevator bank. She had clearly heard the commotion and knew the ship was sinking.

“Going somewhere?” I asked, leaning casually against the doorframe.

Lauren jumped, nearly dropping a stapler. She looked at me, her face pale, trying desperately to muster some kind of defiance. “I’m resigning,” she spat, tossing a file into the box. “This company is a sinking ship anyway. Daniel promised me we’d start a new firm together.”

I couldn't help but laugh. It was a cold, hard sound.

“Start a new firm with what money, Lauren?” I asked, stepping into the room. “I just fired him. I’ve frozen his bank accounts. I’m seizing the corporate apartment you’re currently living in, and my lawyers are drafting a lawsuit to claw back the stolen company funds he used to buy your jewelry. You aren't leaving with a millionaire, sweetheart. You’re leaving with an unemployed, bankrupt fraud.”

Lauren stared at me, the reality crashing down on her. The wealthy lifestyle she had traded her morals for was entirely gone.

“Security will escort you out,” I said, turning away. “Leave the pearls on the desk.”
