Chapter 2 - The Stolen Seat

|

I had absolutely no idea what my teenage daughter was planning, but looking down into her dark eyes, I saw an intensity that took my breath away. I had never seen my little girl look so much like her grandmother. Margaret had been a woman of quiet, terrifying resolve, the kind of woman who never raised her voice but always had the final word. Ellie was channeling that exact same energy now.

“Ellie, sweetheart, I can’t do this,” I whispered, my voice trembling so violently I barely recognized it. The humiliation was a physical weight, pressing down on my chest, suffocating me.

“Maybe she borrowed them,” Ellie whispered back. But her tone was flat. She wasn't asking a question; she was offering me one last, desperate chance to deny the reality unfolding in front of us.

“No, honey,” I choked out, squeezing her hand. “She didn't borrow them. Those are Grandma's pearls.”

Three months earlier, Daniel had offered to take the necklace to a high-end jeweler downtown to have it professionally cleaned before this very anniversary gala. I had thanked him. I had thrown my arms around his neck and kissed him, foolishly believing I was married to a man who cared about my mother’s memory. He hadn't taken them to a jeweler. He had taken them to Lauren.

As I stared at the stage, the depths of the betrayal continued to reveal themselves. Twenty years ago, Daniel and I had worked out of a freezing, uninsulated garage. I had balanced the checkbooks, answered the late-night customer calls with a screaming infant on my hip, and relentlessly chased down unpaid invoices while he swung the hammers. I had built this company’s foundation just as much as he had.

Yet, when I looked at the VIP head table situated right next to the podium, my blood ran cold. The elegant, gold-embossed place cards had been rearranged. My name was nowhere to be found. Sitting right next to Daniel’s placard was a card reading: Lauren Mitchell. My husband had not only given his mistress my mother's jewelry, but he had also quite literally given her my seat at the table.
