Chapter 5 - The Screen Lights Up

|

Onstage, Daniel was entirely oblivious to the technical maneuvering happening just twenty feet to his left. He was reaching out, taking Lauren's hand in his, a gesture so deeply intimate that several guests in the front row shifted uncomfortably in their seats. Whispers began to ripple through the crowd. People weren't stupid; they knew who I was, and they were noticing my absence at the front of the room.

“Sometimes,” Daniel continued, his voice echoing romantically through the hall, “the people who change your life arrive when you least expect them to. And you have to have the courage to embrace that change.”

He finally looked out into the crowd, seeking my reaction, expecting me to be sitting quietly in the back, dutifully accepting my public erasure. But he didn't find me. He found Ellie.

His smile faltered instantly. “Sweetheart? Ellie, what are you doing up here?”

My daughter ignored his question. She confidently climbed the three short stairs to the stage. She was wearing the dark blue velvet dress my mother had bought her for her ninth birthday. I had carefully let out the seams and altered it so she could wear it one final time tonight. She looked like a miniature avenging angel.

Ellie walked right up to Lauren. She didn't say a word to the mistress; she just stared pointedly at the pearls resting around the woman’s neck. Then, she held out her hand to her father, silently demanding the microphone.

Daniel, utterly bewildered and caught off guard by the public setting, handed it over.

“Dad,” Ellie said quietly, her voice ringing crystal clear through the massive ballroom speakers. “Before you thank her, there's something Grandma left for Mom that everyone in this room really needs to see.”

She gave a sharp, definitive nod to the AV coordinator.

Behind Daniel and Lauren, the enormous, twenty-foot presentation screen—which was supposed to be showing a slideshow of newly constructed mansions—suddenly went completely black. The ballroom fell dead silent. A second later, the screen flickered to life.
