Chapter 19 - The New CEO

|
Exactly one year to the day after the disastrous twentieth-anniversary gala, the Grand Palmer Hotel ballroom was filled once again. The crystal chandeliers glowed warmly, casting light over a crowded room of investors, architects, and loyal clients.
This time, there was no anxiety knotting my stomach. There was no imposter syndrome, and there was absolutely no Daniel Harrison.
I stood backstage, taking a deep, calming breath. I was wearing a stunning, tailored emerald-green power suit. I didn't need to hide behind the scenes anymore. I was the face, the brain, and the undisputed sole owner of the newly rebranded enterprise: Margaret & Legacy Custom Builders.
I had named it after my mother. In the past twelve months, I had purged the company of Daniel’s lazy subcontractors, restructured our financial models, and focused heavily on sustainable, modern housing designs. We hadn't just survived the scandal; we had thrived, increasing our profit margins by twenty percent and securing two massive commercial contracts Daniel had been too arrogant to bid on.
The master of ceremonies—a woman this time, one of our top architects—stepped up to the podium.
“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us to celebrate a new era,” she announced, her voice ringing clear and proud. “Please welcome the brilliant mind driving our future, the CEO of Margaret & Legacy, Sarah Davies!”
I stepped out from behind the curtain. The applause was deafening, genuine, and entirely earned. I walked to the podium, looking out over the sea of faces. I saw my lawyer, Marcus, raising a glass of champagne from a front-row table. And right beside him sat Ellie, wearing her pearls, beaming with absolute pride.
I adjusted the microphone, looking out at the empire I had reclaimed.

“Thank you,” I said, my voice steady and commanding. “They say that building a strong foundation is the most important part of any home. But over the last year, I’ve learned that a true foundation isn't made of concrete or steel. It’s made of resilience, truth, and the courage to tear down what is broken to build something better.”
The crowd erupted into cheers. I smiled, looking directly at my daughter, knowing that the future we were building was finally, entirely ours.
