Vivienne’s eyes narrowed. She was not a woman used to being contradicted by anyone, let alone someone standing on the porch of a repurposed family home.
"I am offering to pay triple your standard donation rate," Vivienne countered, opening her designer handbag. "Clara needs to understand the traditions of our family. She needs to know that a Sterling woman does not embarrass her husband by fainting at a charity gala."
Lila stepped out of the front office, hearing the commotion. She stood beside Eleanor. There was no overacting in their response, no theatrical gasps of horror. The reality of domestic cruelty required only cold, grounded observation.
Eleanor looked at the checkbook, then directly into Vivienne’s eyes.
"You aren't looking for a doctor, Vivienne," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a quiet, devastating register. "You are looking for an accomplice."

"I know exactly what you are doing," Eleanor continued, stepping off the porch. "Because I used to be you. I used to measure a woman’s worth by the amount of blood she was willing to shed to keep my floors clean. You think your money buys you the right to break her. It doesn't. If Clara stays here, she stays under our medical and legal protection. And you will not be permitted past these gates."
The utter lack of fear in Eleanor's voice was absolute. Social karma had finally arrived for Vivienne Sterling, delivered by a woman who had already survived the collapse of her own arrogance.
