Chapter 15

Chapter 15: The Gala of Ghosts
Social karma operates in silence. It does not arrive with explosions; it arrives with the devastating turning of backs.
Two weeks later, Vivienne Sterling attended the annual Metropolitan Charity Gala. It was her domain. A high-society luxury setting where she usually reigned supreme, commanding attention and fear with a single, sharp look. She wore a stunning emerald gown, dripping in diamonds, her posture rigidly upright.
She walked into the grand ballroom, a forced, aristocratic smile pasted on her face.
She approached a group of wealthy socialites she had known for a decade. "Beatrice, darling," Vivienne purred, reaching out to air-kiss the woman.
Beatrice’s smile didn't reach her eyes. The micro-expression of deep discomfort tightened her jaw. "Vivienne," she said briskly.
Before Vivienne could speak another word, Beatrice turned her back, seamlessly engaging another woman in conversation, completely cutting Vivienne out of the circle.
Vivienne stood frozen. She blinked, maintaining her smile, and moved to the champagne tower where the board members of her husband's corporation were gathered.
As she approached, the conversation abruptly died. The men looked at their shoes. They looked at their watches. One by one, without a single word of confrontation, they dispersed into the crowd, leaving Vivienne standing entirely alone beside a mountain of expensive crystal glasses.

The story of her son’s abuse, and her own complicity in trying to force Clara back into the cage, had circulated through the elite circles. They didn't care about morality; they cared about scandal. And Vivienne Sterling was now radioactive.
The camera of reality focused tightly on Vivienne’s face. The smile cracked. The muscles in her neck pulled tight. The diamonds around her throat suddenly looked less like jewelry and more like a heavy, suffocating collar. She was surrounded by three hundred people, yet she had never been more invisible in her entire life.
