Chapter 16: The Weight of Soil

Healing is rarely a dramatic revelation. It is usually found in the quiet, mundane rhythms of manual labor.

Clara had been at the Rest House for a month. The dark circles under her eyes had faded. The hollow, hunted look had been replaced by a quiet, cautious observation.

She found herself gravitating toward the expansive vegetable garden at the rear of the property.

One morning, Lila found her kneeling in the dirt, wearing a pair of oversized denim overalls, her hands buried deep in the dark, damp soil as she methodically weeded a row of tomato plants.

Leo was sitting nearby on a picnic blanket, peacefully coloring in a book, completely unbothered by the world.

Lila leaned against the wooden fence, watching the subtle shift in Clara’s physical mechanics. Her shoulders were no longer hiked up in perpetual defense. Her breathing was deep and rhythmic, matching the physical exertion of pulling the weeds. She was grounding herself in reality, pulling strength from the earth.

Clara wiped her brow with the back of her wrist, leaving a streak of dark soil across her pale forehead. She looked up and saw Lila.

Clara didn't force a polite, fake smile. Her lips simply curved into a genuine, tiny, exhausted expression of profound peace.

"It’s heavy," Clara said softly, looking down at the dirt coating her hands.

"The soil?" Lila asked.

"No," Clara replied, her gaze shifting to Leo. "The realization that I actually have the power to keep him safe. It’s heavy. But it’s a good weight."
