Chapter 13

Chapter 13: The Grounding
By mid-afternoon, the adrenaline of the escape had finally worn off, leaving Clara in a state of profound psychological free-fall.
She was sitting in the garden, watching Leo play in the dirt with Mira, when the panic attack struck. It didn't arrive with a dramatic scream. It arrived as a silent, suffocating paralysis. Clara’s vision narrowed to a pinprick. Her hands began to shake uncontrollably, and she gasped for air as if she were drowning on dry land, her chest tight and restricted.
Lila, who was pruning a nearby rosebush, noticed the subtle, erratic shift in Clara’s breathing immediately.
Lila did not rush over and smother her. She didn't shout for help or make sudden, alarming movements. She walked over slowly, keeping her hands visible and open. She knelt on the grass directly in front of Clara, establishing a grounded physical presence.
"Clara. Look at my eyes," Lila said firmly, but quietly.
Clara’s eyes darted wildly before finally locking onto Lila’s steady gaze.
"You are not there anymore. You are here," Lila instructed, her voice a low, rhythmic anchor. "Match my breathing. Inhale for four."
Lila exaggerated her own breath, inhaling slowly through her nose. Clara tried, but it caught in her throat in a jagged sob.
"Try again. Focus on the air hitting the back of your throat. One. Two. Three. Four."
This time, Clara followed.
"Hold it for two. One. Two. Now exhale slowly through your mouth. Push it all out into the grass."
They repeated the cycle. Six times. The tight, terrified micro-expressions on Clara’s face began to dissolve. The violent shaking in her hands slowed to a faint tremor. The cinematic realism of the moment was entirely contained in the subtle, mechanical function of oxygen returning to a panicked brain.

Lila reached out and gently placed her hand over Clara’s.
"The body remembers the war long after the papers are signed," Lila whispered, her eyes shining with deep, unspoken empathy. "But you are allowed to put the armor down now."
