Chapter 50 - The Open Horizon

Two years later.

The park was loud, filled with the sounds of laughing children and barking dogs. The autumn sun was bright and crisp, casting long, golden shadows across the grass.

I sat on a picnic blanket, watching Clara, who was now a confident, vibrant second-grader. She was teaching her little brother, Leo, how to kick a soccer ball. Leo giggled, stumbling over his own tiny feet.

Mark sat beside me, his arm draped casually around my shoulders.

A short distance away, Alex was standing near the edge of the field, cheering Clara on as she finally managed to kick the ball past her brother.

It was an unconventional family. It was messy, it was complex, and it was born from the ashes of a terrible trauma.

But it was completely, undeniably beautiful.

I looked up at the sky. There were no clouds. No ceilings. Just a vast, open expanse of blue.

"What are you thinking about?" Mark asked, handing me a cup of coffee.

I took a sip, leaning back against his chest, watching my children play in the light.

"I'm not thinking about anything," I smiled, realizing it was the absolute truth. "I'm just here."

And for the woman who had once been buried in the dark, being completely, safely here was the greatest miracle of all.
