Chapter 40 - The Family Drawing

Telling Clara was a far more joyful affair.
When she saw the ring, her eyes went wide.
"Does this mean Markie is going to live here forever?" she asked, bouncing on the couch.
"Forever and ever," Mark promised, tickling her sides.
A few weeks later, I was cleaning out Clara’s backpack and found a drawing from her art class. The prompt at the top of the page read: Draw your family.
Clara had drawn a large, sprawling group of stick figures.
There was me, holding her hand. There was Mark, holding her other hand. And standing right next to Mark, holding a blue balloon, was Alex. Above us all, she had drawn a massive, bright yellow sun.
There were no walls in her drawing. No borders.

I pinned it to the center of the refrigerator. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
