Chapter 38 - The Ring

Mark reached into the front pocket of his jacket.

He didn't make a grand, theatrical speech. He didn't drop to one knee on the rocky terrain. He simply opened a small velvet box and placed it on the space between us.

Inside was a simple, elegant diamond ring on a gold band.

My breath caught in my throat.

"I know you spent a long time waiting for someone," Mark said, his voice entirely steady and deeply sincere. "And I know you promised yourself you would never wait again. So, I’m not asking you to wait, Maya. I’m asking you to walk forward. With me. For the rest of our lives."

I looked at the ring, and then at the man who had brought peace back into my life.

I didn't feel the panic of a closing door. I didn't feel the claustrophobia of a trap.

I felt entirely, perfectly free.

"Yes," I breathed, the tears finally spilling over. "Yes, Mark."

He smiled, sliding the ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.

He pulled me into a kiss, and for the first time on November 12th, the anniversary of the worst day of my life became the anniversary of the best.
