Chapter 45 - The Positive Test

Two months later, I sat on the edge of the bathtub, staring at the small plastic stick resting on the counter.
Two pink lines.
The initial wave of joy was instantly followed by a cold, heavy spike of panic.
What if something happens? What if I can't protect this one?
The bathroom suddenly felt very small. The walls seemed to inch closer. I gripped the edge of the sink, struggling to pull air into my lungs.
The bathroom door opened. Mark stepped in.
He saw the test, and then he saw my face.
He didn't celebrate immediately. He recognized the panic. He stepped forward, wrapping his arms around me, pulling my face against his chest.
"Deep breaths, Maya. Count with me. One. Two."
I focused on the rise and fall of his chest. The walls stopped moving. The air returned.
"I'm okay," I gasped, burying my face in his shirt. "I'm okay. We're having a baby."

Mark finally smiled, a massive, brilliant expression of pure joy, and kissed me deeply.
"We're having a baby," he echoed.
