Chapter 46 - The Ultrasound

The pregnancy was different this time.
With Clara, Alex had missed half the appointments, blaming client dinners or golf games. I had sat in the waiting rooms alone, reading magazines, feeling entirely isolated.
Mark never missed a single appointment.
He held my hand during the ultrasounds, his eyes wide with wonder as we watched the small, pulsing heartbeat on the monitor.
"It's a boy," the technician announced during our twenty-week scan.
Mark squeezed my hand, a tear slipping down his cheek.
Clara was thrilled. She immediately began drawing pictures of her new little brother, adding him to the sprawling family portrait on the refrigerator.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't waiting for the other shoe to drop. I was just living.
