Chapter 10: Lily's Lesson
On Thursday afternoon, Lily came home from school looking unusually thoughtful.
She didn't rush into the kitchen looking for cookies like she usually did; instead, she went straight to the living room, plopped down on the sofa, and hugged her backpack tightly to her chest.
Elena and I exchanged a look. Elena slowly walked over and sat down next to her.
"Did something happen at school, little angel?" Elena asked, gently smoothing Lily’s messy hair.
Lily stayed silent for a long time. Finally, she looked up, her wide eyes serious.
"Today, Tommy bullied Sarah during recess. He snatched Sarah's pencil case and threw it in the trash."
"And what did you do?" I asked, stepping closer.
"I yelled at Tommy to stop. I held Sarah's hand and took her to report it to the teacher." Lily lowered her head. "But I was so scared. My heart was pounding, and my hands were shaking. Tommy is much bigger than me."
She looked up at Elena with tear-filled eyes.
"Mommy, I thought when you're brave, you don't feel scared anymore. Why was I still scared?"
Elena smiled, a smile carrying a profound understanding. She wrapped her arms around Lily, pulling her close.
"Lily, being brave doesn't mean you aren't afraid," Elena whispered. "If you weren't scared, your action would just be an easy thing to do. True bravery is when you are utterly terrified, when your hands shake and your heart races, but you still decide to do the right thing."
I looked at Elena. I knew she wasn't just talking about what happened at Lily's school. She was talking about that evening ten years ago, when she stood between my mother and Vanessa.
"So I was brave?" Lily asked again.

"You are the bravest girl I know," Elena replied, kissing her forehead.
That evening, I heard Lily singing softly in the bathroom. The shadow of fear had dissipated. She was learning to carry her mother's bravery, naturally and with pride.
