Chapter 12: A Love Letter from Time

Today is my fiftieth birthday.

There was no huge party or loud commotion. Just a simple dinner with the three most important women in my life: my mother, Elena, and Lily.

My mother baked the apple pie I’ve loved most since childhood. Lily drew a giant card herself, filled inside with crooked handwriting but overflowing with love.

Late at night, when the only sound left was the chirping of crickets, I stepped out onto the balcony. The ocean breeze blew through my hair, now peppered with many silver strands.

Elena came out from behind, wrapping her arms around my waist and resting her chin on my shoulder.

"Happy birthday," she whispered.

"Thank you," I replied, covering her hands with mine.

Together, we looked out at the dark, still ocean. The night sky was scattered with bright, sparkling stars.

I remembered myself from ten years ago. A fifty-year-old man might look back on the past with many regrets. But not me.

The dark days had fallen far behind, like a nightmare that, upon waking, you can only vaguely remember in faint outlines.

Instead, what was most truly present was Elena’s warmth right behind me. It was the steady sound of Lily’s breathing in the bedroom. It was the soft scratch of my mother’s paintbrush every morning.

"What are you thinking about?" Elena asked.

I turned around, looking deep into her eyes.

"I'm thinking that my life has two halves. The first half is made up of wrong choices and bitter lessons." I gently brushed a stray lock of hair from her cheek. "And the second half... started the day you walked into that kitchen."

Elena smiled, standing on her tiptoes to press a soft kiss to my lips.

"So, what are we going to do with the rest of this second half?" she asked.

I looked out at the vast ocean, then back at my small family.

"We will live," I said firmly. "Live fully, one day at a time. Without fear. Without regrets."

We stood there for a long time, letting the sea breeze caress our skin.

Closing a long, stormy journey, we had truly reached the harbor.

There were no more ghosts from the past.

There is only the present. And a wide-open future ahead, overflowing with peace.
