Chapter 17 - Breaking Ground

The first day of renovations at the old boathouse was grueling. The smell of dust, rotting sea-wood, and old fishing nets hung heavy in the air. Armed with crowbars and sledgehammers, Elena and I spent the entire weekend tearing out the moldy drywall to expose the beautiful, original brick beneath.
My muscles ached in a way they hadn't in years, but it was a good, honest pain. Every nail I pulled, every plank I replaced, felt like a physical manifestation of my own redemption.
My mother brought us sandwiches and iced tea at noon, setting up a makeshift picnic on the tailgate of my truck. We sat together, covered in dust and sweat, looking at the skeletal remains of the building.
"What are we going to call it?" my mother asked, handing me a napkin.
I looked at Elena. We had debated dozens of names over the past few weeks, but none of them felt quite right. Elena looked at the building, then out at the ocean.

"The Anchor," Elena said softly. "Because this place, this town... it’s what kept us from drifting away."
I smiled, squeezing her shoulder. "The Anchor it is."
