Chapter 11: The Circle of Healing

November marked the ten-year anniversary of the publication of Elena’s first book.
The community support group she founded decided to host a small ceremony at the town’s cultural center to honor her.
I sat in the very front row with my mother and Lily.
The room was packed. There were people whose faces I had grown familiar with over the years, and people I was meeting for the first time. The only thing they had in common were their eyes—eyes that had once been shattered, but were now slowly healing.
As Elena stepped up to the podium, the entire auditorium fell silent.
She wore a cream-colored dress, simple yet radiant.
"Ten years ago, I thought I was simply writing a diary to save myself," Elena began, her voice clear and warm. "I never imagined that my pain, that our family's fear, could become the bridge that brought me to all of you."
She paused, looking around the auditorium.
"People often say time heals all wounds. But I don't believe that. Time does nothing on its own. It is what we do with that time that creates the healing. Sharing, listening, and having the courage to speak the truth—that is the medicine."
A woman in the third row took a tissue to wipe her tears. An older man next to her gently patted her shoulder.
Elena looked straight at me. Her eyes held a deep, quiet, and steadfast love, just like the surface of the ocean outside.

"Never be ashamed of your scars," she said in closing. "They are proof that you survived."
The entire auditorium rose to a standing ovation. My mother squeezed my hand, smiling proudly. I looked at the woman on the podium—my wife, the person who changed the trajectory of my life—and realized that the light she brought didn't just illuminate our family, but it had lit up countless other lives.
