Chapter 18 - The Approaching Storm

Autumn brought a fierce unpredictability to the coast. The local meteorologist had been warning us all week about a massive nor'easter brewing off the Atlantic.

Inside, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the chaos outside. Elena had a pot of stew simmering on the stove, filling the house with the scent of rosemary and slow-cooked beef. My mother and Lily were sitting by the fireplace, working on a massive, thousand-piece jigsaw puzzle.

I stood by the window, watching the rain lash against the glass. There was a time when a storm like this would have filled me with anxiety, a reflection of the turmoil inside my own mind. But now, safely enclosed within these walls with the people I loved, the storm outside only amplified the profound peace I felt within. We were safe. We were together. That was all that mattered.
