Chapter 32 - The Endless Horizon

The reception was a bonfire on the beach. We roasted marshmallows, drank dark red wine, and danced barefoot in the sand under a canopy of brilliant stars.
Late into the night, as the fire burned down to glowing embers, I stepped away from the crowd. I walked to the edge of the water, letting the cool, foaming tide wash over my bare feet.
Elena found me a few minutes later, wrapping her arms around my waist from behind, resting her chin on my shoulder, exactly as she had done on the balcony on my fiftieth birthday.
"Happy wedding day," she whispered.
"Thank you, Mrs. [My Last Name]," I smiled, turning my head to kiss her temple.
We looked out at the dark, still ocean together. The journey had been unimaginably long. I had sailed through treacherous waters, navigated by broken compasses, and survived storms that should have drowned me.
But standing here, feeling the solid earth beneath my feet, the warmth of my wife against my back, and hearing the distant, joyous laughter of my daughter and mother by the fire... I knew the truth.
The harbor wasn't just a place. It was them.

I looked up at the stars, then out at the endless, sprawling horizon. There was no fear left in my heart. There was no shadow of the past creeping up behind me.
There was only the horizon. And it was absolutely, infinitely beautiful.
