Chapter 9

The silence in Marisela’s downtown law office was so profound it felt physically suffocating. The massive glass windows offered a panoramic view of the sprawling Mexico City skyline, but none of us were looking at the view. We were all staring at the thick stack of papers Arturo Leon had delivered, spread out across the polished mahogany conference table like a venomous snake preparing to strike. Valentina sat beside me, her hand resting reassuringly over mine, her thumb drawing slow, calming circles against my knuckles. I was struggling to keep my breathing even.
"It's a masterful piece of legal forgery wrapped in legitimate corporate loopholes," Marisela finally said, breaking the heavy silence. She tossed her reading glasses onto the table and rubbed her temples in deep frustration. "During the height of your marriage, before you discovered Karina's ties to the Mendoza family, you granted her a comprehensive power of attorney to handle the estate's tax restructuring. It was a standard procedure. But she used that authority to quietly underwrite a massive, high-interest loan from a shadow corporation—Apex Holdings."
"And she used my father's land as the collateral," I finished the thought, the taste of bile rising in the back of my throat. "She knew the Mendoza civil suit might fail. She knew we might ultimately win the property back. This was her failsafe. A financial landmine buried in the paperwork, designed to detonate the moment we tried to actually use the land."
"Exactly," Marisela nodded grimly. "The loan was designed to default. The capital was routed into an untraceable offshore account and vanished. Now, Apex Holdings is legally claiming the property to cover the defaulted debt. If we fight this in standard civil court, they will tie the health center's construction up in litigation for the next ten years. The foundation will literally rot in the ground before we can pour the next layer of concrete."
"Karina is sitting in a minimum-security federal prison," I said, my voice tight with a cold, focused fury. "She doesn't have the reach to orchestrate a multinational shadow corporation from a jail cell. Someone else is pulling the strings. Someone who wanted this land just as badly as the Mendozas did, someone who used them as the blunt instrument while remaining entirely clean on paper."

Valentina looked at me, her dark eyes filled with a mixture of concern and unwavering support. "Then we need to find out who holds the leash," she said quietly. "If we can prove Apex Holdings is a fraudulent front connected to the original conspiracy, the lien becomes invalid. We can't let them halt the clinic, Alejandro. Your mother has poured too much of her soul into seeing this finished."
"I know," I said, standing up from the table. "Which is why I need to pay my ex-wife a visit. She's the only one who knows whose name is actually on the bottom of that shadow contract."
