Chapter 2 - The Mendoza Connection

Detective Fuentes met me at the police station the following morning, and I spread the contents of my father's box across the table between us, watching her expression shift from professional attentiveness into something considerably more focused as she absorbed the full scope of what the documents suggested.

"I want to be careful about how we characterize this," she said, once she'd finished reviewing everything. "Your father's death was investigated at the time and ruled natural causes. Reopening that determination twenty-two years later, based on a letter describing vague threats, is going to require considerably more evidence than what you've brought me today, however suggestive the timeline appears."

"What about the present situation," I asked. "The forged power of attorney, the withheld medication, the sale agreement listing Karina's brother as the buyer's representative for a company chaired by Jorge Mendoza. That's not vague, Detective. That's an active, ongoing scheme."

"That part, I agree, gives us considerably more to work with immediately," Fuentes said. "I've already requested a full financial and document forensics review on the power of attorney and the sale agreement. If we can establish that your mother lacked capacity to sign, or that the signature itself was forged, that alone gives us grounds for fraud charges independent of whatever happened to your father decades ago."

The forensic document examiner, a meticulous specialist named Dr. Ramon Aguilar, completed his analysis within two weeks, and his findings arrived with a clarity that made the fraud's full scope impossible to dismiss as any kind of misunderstanding.

"The signature on the power of attorney does not match your mother's authenticated signature from her medical records or her original property deed," Dr. Aguilar explained, during a briefing with Detective Fuentes and myself. "The forgery is competent but not expert — likely produced by someone with access to genuine signature samples but without specialized forgery training. Combined with the medical evidence establishing your mother's severely limited hand mobility following her stroke, I'd testify confidently that she was physically incapable of producing the signature that appears on this document."

"And the sale agreement," I asked.

"Contingent entirely on the power of attorney's validity," Dr. Aguilar said. "Once that document is established as fraudulent, the sale agreement itself becomes legally void, regardless of whether the transaction had otherwise proceeded to completion."

Detective Fuentes, armed with this forensic confirmation, expanded the investigation considerably over the following weeks, obtaining warrants for Karina's financial records, her brother Emilio's business dealings with Mendoza Urban Development, and communications between Karina and Jorge Mendoza that painted an increasingly detailed picture of a scheme considerably more calculated and long-running than I had initially understood.

"We found text messages between Karina and Jorge Mendoza dating back nearly three years," Fuentes told me, during a briefing that made my stomach turn with fresh, retroactive horror at the marriage I'd believed, until three weeks earlier, was built on genuine love rather than a calculated, decades-long family vendetta. "References to 'the Ruiz situation' and 'finally resolving what my father started' appear repeatedly. We also found evidence that Emilio Ruiz — Karina's brother — has worked in various capacities for Mendoza Urban Development for over eight years, considerably longer than Karina ever disclosed to you during your marriage."

"So the marriage itself," I said slowly, forcing the words out despite how badly they tasted. "It was never real."

Fuentes's expression carried genuine sympathy. "I can't speak to her personal feelings with any certainty," she said. "But the documentary evidence strongly suggests the relationship was, at minimum, initiated with this scheme already in mind. Whether genuine affection developed alongside that original motive is something I don't think any forensic investigation can definitively answer."

I sat with that uncertain, painful ambiguity for a long time after Fuentes's briefing concluded, understanding that whatever genuine moments I'd believed we'd shared across nearly six years of marriage now existed under a shadow of doubt I would likely never fully resolve.
