Chapter 14

Armed with the devastating contents of my father’s lockbox, Valentina and I drove straight to Marisela’s law office. We laid the leather-bound journal, the marked zoning maps, and the microcassette recorder on the polished conference table. Marisela stared at the evidence, her usually composed, professional demeanor cracking under the sheer, terrifying magnitude of what we had just uncovered.

"We need to play the tape," Marisela said, her voice unusually tight. She found an old, dusty cassette player in the firm's storage closet and carefully inserted the tiny tape.

A sharp hiss of static filled the room, followed by the unmistakable, booming voice of Senator Roberto Vargas, though sounding twenty-two years younger. The recording was a clandestine capture of a heated argument.

"You are being completely unreasonable, Hector," Vargas's voice crackled through the speaker. "The Coyoacán sector is the future of this city's elite commercial district. The Mendozas have already cleared out the residential resistance. You are standing in the way of progress. Sign the deed over to my holding company, and you walk away a very rich man."

Then, my father’s voice, calm, incredibly brave, and resolute, answered him. "Your idea of progress is built on the blood of innocent families, Roberto. I will not sell the land to you, and I will not let your cartel thugs bulldoze this community. I am taking the financial ledgers to the federal prosecutor on Monday."

"If you walk out that door, Hector, you will not live to see Monday," Vargas replied, his tone dropping into a chilling, sociopathic whisper. "The land will be mine. One way or another."

The tape clicked and went dead. The silence in the office was deafening.

"It's absolute, undeniable proof of murder-for-hire," I said, my hands shaking with a mixture of grief and pure, white-hot rage. "Vargas ordered the hit on my father. He used the Mendozas to execute it, and now he is using Apex Holdings to finally seize the land he couldn't get two decades ago."

Marisela aggressively rubbed her temples. "Alejandro, you must understand the extreme danger we are in right now. We cannot simply take this to the local police. Vargas effectively owns half the judges and law enforcement officials in this city. If we walk into a precinct with this evidence, the tape will conveniently 'disappear' in an evidence locker, and you and Valentina will likely be killed in a tragic, unsolved car accident by the end of the week. We are dealing with a man who has spent twenty years consolidating absolute power. We have to be smarter, and much more ruthless, than he is."
