Chapter 3 - What Emilio Confessed

Emilio Ruiz — Karina's brother, though I understood now that "Ruiz" was likely his professional alias given the family's evident preference for obscuring their actual connection to my father's old business rival — was arrested three weeks after Detective Fuentes's investigation expanded to include the Mendoza Urban Development connection, facing charges of fraud and conspiracy alongside Karina's own mounting legal exposure.
Facing the weight of documentary evidence considerably harder to dispute than his sister's continued denials, Emilio began cooperating with prosecutors within days of his arrest, offering an account that filled in the remaining gaps of a scheme I was only now beginning to fully understand.
"Jorge Mendoza has spent nearly a decade trying to reacquire the Coyoacán parcel his father lost to your father in the 1970s," Emilio told investigators, in testimony Detective Fuentes shared with me once the formal cooperation agreement was finalized. "He tried direct negotiation with Doña Elena twice, both times unsuccessful, because she refused even to discuss selling land she considered her late husband's legacy. Once it became clear direct approaches wouldn't work, Jorge began exploring alternative strategies — specifically, whether there was a path toward acquiring the land through a family member with legal authority over her affairs, once her health inevitably declined."
"And Karina volunteered for that role," I said, my voice flat with a fury I was only barely managing to contain.
"Karina and I both did," Emilio admitted. "Jorge approached us nearly four years ago, before you and Karina had even begun dating. He'd identified you as Elena's only child and legal heir, and he offered substantial compensation for whoever could successfully position themselves to eventually gain control over the property once Elena's health made that control legally possible."
I felt something in my chest go entirely cold, understanding, with devastating finality, that my entire marriage had been constructed, from its very earliest moments, as a calculated instrument in someone else's decades-old vendetta.
"Did she ever actually care about me," I asked, though I understood, asking Emilio this question, that I was unlikely to receive an answer I could fully trust from a man whose own testimony was itself a strategic legal maneuver rather than a genuine confession of conscience.
"I believe some of it became real for her, over time," Emilio said, with what sounded like genuine, if self-serving, sincerity. "But the marriage began as a calculated strategy, Alejandro. I won't pretend otherwise, not now, with everything already documented as thoroughly as it is."
The full financial scope of the scheme, once Emilio's cooperation combined with the forensic accounting review, revealed a plan considerably more elaborate than simply forging a single power of attorney. Karina had, over the preceding eighteen months, been quietly gathering additional documentation intended to support a formal legal declaration of my mother's incompetence — medical opinions solicited from physicians paid substantial consulting fees by entities eventually traced back to Mendoza Urban Development, alongside carefully documented "episodes" of confusion that Karina had apparently staged or exaggerated specifically to build a paper trail supporting the eventual incompetence filing.
"Once Elena was declared legally incompetent, the power of attorney would have given Karina complete authority to finalize the sale," Emilio explained. "Jorge intended to purchase the land at roughly one-third of its actual market value, structured through a series of transactions designed to make the below-market price appear justified by supposed development costs and legal complications tied to the original 1970s dispute."
"And my mother's medication," I asked. "The deliberate withholding."
Emilio's expression grew visibly uncomfortable. "Jorge believed accelerating Elena's physical decline would strengthen the incompetence case considerably, and reduce the time required before the sale could be finalized," he said. "I want to be clear that I never personally participated in withholding her medication. That was entirely Karina's decision, implemented without my direct knowledge, though I won't pretend I didn't understand, in general terms, that the overall strategy required Elena's health to decline rather than improve."

I left that interview with Detective Fuentes feeling a grief and fury so completely intertwined I could barely separate one from the other — my father's death, my mother's suffering, and six years of my own life, all of it apparently subordinated to a real estate dispute that had originated decades before I was even born.
