Chapter 18

Marisela’s federal contact delivered. Three days later, a heavy, sealed evidence box was discreetly couriered to our safehouse. Inside sat a sleek, silver external hard drive—the digital vault where Karina had meticulously hidden the intricate, sprawling financial web of the Mendoza cartel and, theoretically, their connections to Senator Vargas.

The problem was the encryption. The drive was protected by a state-of-the-art, multi-layered biometric firewall. If we entered the wrong password three times, the drive would initiate a self-destruct protocol, permanently and irretrievably wiping all the data.

To bypass the security, Marisela brought in a brilliant, highly eccentric white-hat hacker named Mateo. He was a young prodigy who worked exclusively in the shadows, helping journalists and whistleblowers expose corporate corruption. Mateo set up a massive array of high-powered laptops and servers on our dining table, transforming the safehouse into a makeshift cyber-command center.

"This is incredibly sophisticated architecture," Mateo muttered, his fingers flying rapidly across his keyboards as lines of complex code cascaded down his monitors. "Whoever built this firewall for your ex-wife was a complete genius. It’s actively fighting back, shifting the encryption keys every sixty seconds."

For two agonizing days, Valentina, my mother, and I lived in a state of suffocating, unbearable tension. We brought Mateo endless cups of black coffee and barely slept, watching the loading bars on his screens crawl forward at an excruciatingly slow pace. Every sudden beep from his computers made my heart stop, terrified that the drive had completely wiped itself.

On the evening of the third day, Mateo let out a sharp, triumphant shout. "I breached the first two layers! I am inside the primary directory!"

We all rushed to the table. On the central monitor, hundreds of neatly organized folders suddenly appeared, labeled with the names of dozens of international shell companies, including Apex Holdings.

"Download everything immediately," I ordered, feeling a massive surge of adrenaline.

"I'm initiating the mass transfer now," Mateo said, typing furiously. But suddenly, a massive red warning warning banner flashed violently across his main screen. A loud, piercing alarm began to emit from the hard drive itself.

"Dammit!" Mateo cursed loudly, his face paling. "The breach triggered a silent, secondary trapdoor. It's not just a firewall; it's an active beacon. Someone on the other end knows we are inside the drive, and they are deploying an aggressive malware counter-attack to destroy the servers. We have exactly three minutes before the entire drive melts down from the inside out."
