Chapter 22

The deafening roar of automatic gunfire shattered the quiet ambiance of the financial district. Our two private security contractors returned fire with fierce, disciplined precision, utilizing the heavy kitchen marble as impenetrable cover. The air instantly filled with the sharp, acrid smell of cordite and the terrifying sound of shattering glass as the beautiful, panoramic windows were completely blown out by stray bullets.

I stayed crouched behind the dining table, my body shielding Valentina and my mother. I raised my pistol, my hands shaking violently with adrenaline, and fired three rapid shots at a masked attacker attempting to flank our position from the hallway. One of my bullets caught him in the shoulder, spinning him violently backward and buying us precious seconds of survival.

"We are completely pinned down!" one of the security guards shouted over the chaotic noise, reloading his rifle with frantic speed. "They have superior numbers! We need an immediate extraction route!"

"There is no extraction route!" Marisela yelled back, clutching her laptop tightly to her chest, terrified of losing the critical evidence. "We are on the fourteenth floor!"

The hit squad relentlessly advanced, using heavy suppressive fire to keep us completely pinned behind the furniture. Bullets chewed aggressively through the drywall and destroyed the expensive artwork hanging above us. I knew with absolute certainty that we could not hold them off for more than a few minutes. Vargas had sent professionals to ensure we never saw the sunrise.

Suddenly, the unmistakable, piercing wail of multiple, heavy police sirens echoed loudly from the city streets far below. The federal prosecutor had not waited. Upon receiving the encrypted files, she had immediately mobilized a massive, heavily armed federal tactical team, realizing we were in imminent, critical danger.

The sound of the approaching sirens caused a sudden, sharp hesitation in the attackers' assault. The leader of the hit squad barked a harsh, frantic command in a language I didn't recognize. Realizing they were about to be completely surrounded and trapped by federal forces, the mercenaries abruptly abandoned their assault. They laid down one final, heavy barrage of covering fire and sprinted back out the shattered doorway, retreating down the emergency stairwells to escape before the building was fully locked down.

The abrupt silence in the ruined apartment was absolutely terrifying. We stayed huddled on the floor, breathing heavily, completely covered in dust and shattered glass, waiting for the federal agents to finally arrive.
