Chapter 8 - The Arrogant Mistake

|

While Beatrice and I quietly positioned our chess pieces, Richard grew dangerously arrogant. Drunk on his own perceived invincibility, he made his final, fatal mistake.

A heavy knock rattled the door of my cheap apartment. I checked the peephole and saw a man in a cheap suit holding a manila envelope. A process server. I opened the door just enough to snatch the envelope from his hand before slamming it shut.

Inside was a formal legal notice. Richard was demanding that I immediately vacate and sign over the deed to the Kensington family lake house—the absolute last piece of property my father had left in my name.

Attached to the sterile legal document was a handwritten note on expensive, watermarked stationery. I recognized Richard’s sharp, looping handwriting immediately.

Margaret,

Stop dragging this out. You lost. Sign the deed and disappear gracefully. You’re nothing now, and I’d hate to have to send my lawyers to destroy whatever pathetic little life you’re trying to build. Leave the city.

- R.

I stared at the note, tracing the arrogant ink with my finger. I didn't cry. I didn't throw things. I threw my head back and laughed. The sound echoed in the empty, dark apartment, sharp and dangerous.

"What is it?" Beatrice asked, emerging from the small kitchen.

I handed her the note. She read it, her jaw tightening in disgust.

"He really thinks you're terrified of him," she muttered.

"He thinks I'm a victim," I corrected her, walking over to the laptop. "He thinks because I’m quiet, I’ve surrendered. He doesn't realize that in a game of survival, the loudest animal in the jungle is usually the first one to get shot."

I opened a secure email server.

"Are the federal IRS agents ready?" I asked Beatrice.

"Waiting on your signal. The state prosecutor’s special integrity unit is also on standby. They want redemption for putting an innocent woman in prison."

"Good," I hit a button on the keyboard. "Execute the asset freeze. Drain his accounts. Lock the company down. By tomorrow morning, I don't want Richard to be able to buy a cup of coffee without asking my permission."

"And the wedding rehearsal?" Beatrice asked, checking her watch.

"Oh," I smiled, grabbing my crimson designer coat from the chair. "I wouldn't miss it for the world."
