Chapter 15 - The Golden Traitors Turn

|

As the metal handcuffs clicked tightly around Richard’s wrists, Savannah realized her fairy-tale life was ending in real-time. The social status, the penthouse, the stolen diamonds—all of it was dissolving into a federal prison sentence.

She cracked completely.

"It was Richard!" she shrieked, pulling her arms away from an arresting officer, tears ruining her heavy mascara, leaving black tracks down her pale cheeks. "He made me do it! He came up with the plan! He told me he would leave me if I didn't help him frame Margaret!"

Richard raised his head from the floor, his eyes blazing with pure, unrestrained venom as the officers pulled him to his feet.

"Shut your mouth, you stupid, greedy gold-digger!" Richard screamed at her, his voice hoarse. "You begged for the money! You threatened to go to the press if I didn't give you half the company!"

"He forced me!" Savannah wailed to the crowd, looking around desperately for a single sympathetic face among the elite guests who had been drinking her champagne minutes ago. But every single person turned their back on her, pulling out their phones to record her pathetic breakdown. "I'm a victim! I was manipulated!"

"You're a whore who sold herself for a diamond bracelet!" Richard spat back, his face contorted in rage.

It was a glorious, grotesque sight. The grand romance, the epic love story that had been splashed across lifestyle magazines as a "triumph over tragedy," was stripped entirely naked. They were two rats in a flooding cage, tearing each other apart for a scrap of air.

I stood in my crimson suit, watching them scream obscenities at each other as they were hauled toward the doors. I felt no satisfaction, no joy, and no sadness. I only felt the cold, clean feeling of absolute justice.

Richard looked back at me one last time as the police pushed him through the threshold. Tears of genuine, hopeless panic finally spilled from his eyes.

"Margaret, please!" he choked out, his arrogance completely shattered. "Talk to Beatrice! Work out a deal! I'll give you the company back! I'll give you everything! Just don't let them lock me up!"

I looked him straight in the eye, my hands casually resting in my suit pockets.

"You took my freedom, Richard," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the ruined ballroom. "You don't get to offer me what was already mine."
