Chapter 20 - The Phantom Blueprint

|
Spring arrived in Chicago, bringing warm rain and blooming trees. Kensington Medical Logistics had just secured a historic international contract, and my post-conviction foundation had successfully exonerated its first two wrongfully imprisoned women. My life was balanced, peaceful, and entirely my own.
Late one Friday evening, long after my staff had gone home, I was finishing up paperwork in my top-floor office. The city lights twinkled like a sea of diamonds outside my window.
A sharp knock rattled the heavy glass door of my private suite.
I looked up, frowning. The building security protocol required everyone to check in at the lobby desk after 7:00 PM. I picked up the internal intercom phone. "Security?"
There was no answer, just static.
I stood up, adjusting my jacket, and walked over to the door. Standing in the dimly lit hallway was a courier wearing a plain black uniform. He didn't speak. He simply handed me a heavy, sleek black leather binder sealed with a silver wax stamp before turning and walking briskly toward the executive elevators.
I brought the binder to my desk and broke the silver seal.
Inside were hundreds of pages of highly confidential, encrypted financial ledgers. My eyes scanned the lines of data, my forensic training kicking in instantly. My heart began to hammer against my ribs.
These weren't Richard's accounts. These accounts were ten times larger, moving hundreds of millions of dollars through global shadow banks—and the wire transfers directly funded high-ranking politicians, federal judges, and international medical cartels.
Tucked into the front pocket of the binder was a single, handwritten note on heavy parchment paper, written in an elegant, unfamiliar script:
Dear Margaret,
Richard was a small-time crook, a foolish pawn who thought he was playing chess when he was barely playing checkers. He stole peanuts compared to what we control.
We watched how effortlessly you dismantled his empire from a prison cell. We watched how cleanly you took control of Kensington Medical Logistics. You have a rare, magnificent talent for destruction, Mrs. Kensington.
Your father knew about our network before he died. In fact, he was our chief financial architect until he tried to walk away. Richard didn't ruin your father's legacy... your father did.
Consider this binder your official invitation to the real boardroom. You can use your skills to help us manage the syndicate, or you can try to fight us the way you fought Richard. But be warned: we don't send people to prison, Margaret. We make them disappear.
We will be in touch soon.
- The Archduke.
I stood alone in my glowing office, holding the note, looking down at the massive web of global corruption sitting on my desk. The rain began to patter gently against the high glass windows.

Richard was gone. The fake miscarriage was exposed. My name was cleared. But as I stared into the dark reflection of the window, I realized my battle wasn't over.
It had only just begun.
