Chapter 7 - The Architecture of Ruin

|
My new command center was a cheap, dimly lit apartment on the outskirts of the city. Beatrice insisted I stay out of sight while we prepared the final blow. I spent my days wrapped in a threadbare blanket, staring at an encrypted laptop screen that displayed the absolute rot of Richard’s empire.
He had turned Kensington Medical Logistics into a massive laundromat for dirty money.
"Look at this," I pointed to the screen as Beatrice walked in with Chinese takeout. "He’s been overbilling the rural state hospitals by almost three hundred percent for basic MRI machines. He takes the excess profit, routes it through a shell company in the Caymans, and then funnels it back into a fake charity organization."
Beatrice set the food down, peering over my shoulder.
"Who runs the charity?" she asked.
"Savannah’s deadbeat brother, Marcus," I sneered. "He hasn't worked a legitimate day in his life, but suddenly he’s the CEO of a foundation pulling in five million a year. They’re stealing federal health funds to buy yachts and penthouse suites."
"White-collar crime is messy, Margaret," Beatrice warned, handing me a pair of chopsticks. "He could tie this up in court for years. We need the fatal strike."
"Did you find the video?" I asked, looking up at her.
Beatrice’s lips curled into a slow, vicious smile. She reached into her bag and pulled out a small, black USB drive, placing it on the table like a loaded gun.
"It took three private investigators and fifty thousand dollars in bribes," Beatrice said, her eyes shining with triumph. "A private security guard working at the Grand Orion Hotel that night had a dashcam running in his personal vehicle. He parked right next to the stairs. He kept the footage because he thought he could blackmail Richard one day, but he got too scared."
I plugged the drive into my laptop. My hands were shaking.
The video was grainy, time-stamped at 2:15 AM on the night of my supposed attack. Savannah stumbled into the frame, violently drunk, wearing a sequined dress and clutching a cell phone. She missed a step, twisting her ankle, and tumbled hard down the concrete stairs, scraping her face and arms.
Then, the audio kicked in. Clear as day.
"I’ll just say that crazy bitch Margaret did it!" she slurred into the phone, screaming at whoever was on the other end. "Richard promised me half the company once she’s locked away! I want my money!"

I paused the video. The silence in the room was deafening.
"We have them," I whispered, tears of pure adrenaline pricking my eyes. "We finally have them."
