Chapter 18 - Mariana’s Desperation

|

Three weeks after the court hearing, I was sitting at an outdoor café near the Plaza Mayor enjoying a quiet afternoon espresso with Lucía.

A shadow fell over our table.

I looked up, expecting a waiter, but found Mariana standing beside us.

She looked ten years older. Her polished aristocratic image was completely shattered; her hair was unstyled, her designer handbag was scuffed, and her hands trembled as she clutched a small envelope.

"Elena..." Mariana whispered, her voice stripped of all its former malice and arrogance.

Lucía immediately reached for her phone to call the police, but I raised my hand, stopping her.

"What do you want, Mariana?" I asked calmly.

Mariana dropped into the empty chair beside us, tears welling in her eyes. "Please... I am begging you. Talk to the tax prosecutors. Tell them it was a mistake. They are foreclosing on my house in Marbella. They're taking everything!"

I set my coffee cup down softly on the saucer.

"You sat at that restaurant table, Mariana," I said, looking into her tear-filled eyes, "and you smiled while your son threw wine in my face. You told him that women need to learn who holds the leash."

Mariana sobbed, shaking her head frantically. "I was wrong! I was arrogant! Please, Elena... Rafael can't find a job anywhere in Spain! We have nothing left!"

"You have exactly what you created, Mariana," I said softly. "You taught your son that power comes from cruelty. Now you are both learning that cruelty always collects its debt."

I stood up, placed a ten-euro note on the table to cover my coffee, and walked away without looking back once.
