Chapter 12 - Desperate Texts

By three in the morning, I was settled into the guest bedroom of Lucía’s apartment across town. I wore a pair of borrowed cotton pajamas, my hair freshly washed and free of the sticky wine stain.
My phone, resting on the nightstand, began to vibrate uncontrollably.
It was Rafael.
I didn't answer. Instead, I watched the text messages flood my screen in real-time, watching his emotional state swing wildly like a pendulum.
3:12 AM: Elena, answer me! My mother had to pay ten thousand euros for my bail! You’re insane!
3:18 AM: If you don't drop these charges by tomorrow morning, I will make sure you never work in financial analysis in this city again!
3:30 AM: Elena please... I was drunk. You know how my mother pushes my buttons. I didn't mean to throw the wine.
3:45 AM: Please come home. We can fix this. I love you.
4:02 AM: You ruined my life over a stupid dinner! You worthless bitch!
I took screenshot after screenshot of every message, saving them directly to a cloud drive shared with Lucía. Every word he sent was another nail in his legal coffin.

At 4:15 AM, I opened his contact profile, tapped the screen, and selected Block Contact.
