Chapter 11 - The Midnight Exodus

|
By one o'clock in the morning, Lucía and I arrived at the apartment I shared with Rafael in the trendy neighborhood of Salamanca.
The apartment was large, filled with expensive Italian furniture and artwork that I had selected, though Rafael had insisted on putting only his name on the lease.
"We have two hours before his mother posts his bail," Lucía warned, watching the door while I pulled two large suitcases from the closet. "Take only what belongs to you legally."
"I don't want his furniture, Lucía," I said, pulling out my laptop, my private documents, and my mother's heirloom jewelry box. "I only want my life back."
I opened my laptop and logged into our shared bank accounts. Over three years, I had deposited over two hundred thousand euros of my own earnings into the joint investment fund.
With a few precise clicks, I initiated a wire transfer, moving my exact legal share of the funds into a new, private account I had opened under my maiden name three months prior—an account Rafael knew nothing about.
I left his personal funds completely untouched. I was taking back what was mine, not a single cent more.
Next, I packed my wardrobe, my work files, and my personal books. Within forty-five minutes, my life was packed into three black suitcases sitting near the front entrance.
Before leaving, I took my wedding ring—a heavy diamond band that Rafael had constantly reminded me was an "investment"—and set it cleanly on the glass coffee table in the living room.

Beside the ring, I left a sticky note with a single word written in dark ink:
Paid.
