Chapter 18 - The Open Door

|

My experience didn't just change my personal life; it gave me a new purpose.

With the help of Elise, Sienna, and Rebecca, we established a non-profit foundation called The Open Door Project. We operated out of a quiet office near the financial district, offering legal consultation, emergency financial auditing, and temporary housing assistance to women trapped in financially coercive or emotionally abusive relationships.

We didn't tell women what to do. We gave them facts, reviewed their documents, and helped them build their own 'blue folders.'

At our very first workshop, twelve women attended. By our sixth month, the room was packed with over forty women from all walks of life.

One evening, after a session on spotting financial red flags before marriage, a young woman lingered behind. She looked no older than twenty-four, nervously twisting a dainty diamond engagement ring on her finger.

"I feel like I'm crazy," she whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "He hasn't hurt me physically. But his mother insists I quit my job, and he locked our joint savings account last week..."

I walked over, sitting beside her, and gently handed her a tissue.

"You're not crazy," I said softly, looking into her frightened eyes. "You are listening to the part of you that wants to survive. And you don't have to wait until it gets worse to walk away."

As I handed her Elise’s contact card, I felt a deep, quiet sense of closure settle in my chest. My worst morning had become another woman's lifeline.
