Chapter 16 - Different Hands

|

I met Julian Hale eighteen months after the annulment, during a commercial restoration project in the city.

Julian was a structural engineer—quiet, observant, with warm hazel eyes and a laugh that felt entirely unforced. Unlike Caleb, who constantly competed for attention, Julian was comfortable in his own skin. He listened more than he spoke, and he treated my professional expertise with effortless respect.

Our relationship didn't start with grand, performative gestures or overwhelming promises. It grew slowly, built on shared coffee breaks, late-night blueprint reviews, and quiet conversations about our goals.

When I finally felt ready to tell him about my past, we were sitting on a bench overlooking the harbor. I told him everything—the morning after the wedding, the greasy dishes, the blue folder, and the court battle.

Julian listened quietly, his hand resting gently on the wooden bench near mine, giving me space.

When I finished, he didn't call me a 'victim' or make dramatic declarations about saving me. He simply turned to me, his eyes full of steady warmth.

"You were incredibly smart," Julian said softly. "You trusted your gut when most people would have let fear trap them. I admire that."

That night, as we walked back to my apartment, Julian didn't grab my arm or control my pace. He walked beside me, matching my stride.

For the first time in years, being close to a man didn't feel like navigating a minefield. It felt like coming home.
