Chapter 13 - Played in Court

The voice that echoed through the room was unmistakably Caleb's. It was a voicemail he had left on my phone two nights after I left.

“You think you're smart, Marina? You think your little architecture job makes you independent? You're my wife now. You embarrassed me in front of my mother, and you know what happens to people who embarrass me. I will take half of everything you own, and no one will ever want a broke, divorced woman like you.”

The silence in the conference room was deafening.

Caleb’s attorney closed his folder slowly, rubbing his temples in utter defeat. Dorothea gasped, her face flushing crimson with embarrassment.

"Furthermore," Elise continued, pulling out a second stack of paper, "we have sworn affidavits from Ms. Sienna Voss and Ms. Rebecca Rourke, detailing a decade-long pattern of financial exploitation, intimidation, and fraud executed by the Rourke family."

"This is a witch hunt!" Dorothea blurted out from the back, breaking court decorum. "My son is a gentleman!"

"Your son," the judge presiding over the hearing interrupted sternly, looking over his glasses at Dorothea, "is facing serious allegations of civil fraud and emotional distress. Madam, sit down and keep quiet, or I will have you removed."

Elise turned to Caleb’s attorney. "We are offering a full annulment, a complete waiver of any marital asset claims, and the immediate return of my client’s personal property. If you decline, we file a criminal complaint for financial fraud by the end of the day."

Caleb looked at his lawyer, his eyes wide with panic. "Can she do that?"

His lawyer leaned over, whispering harshly into Caleb’s ear. "Sign the papers, Caleb. Now. Before you end up in front of a grand jury."
