Chapter 11 - The Forgotten Sister

Sienna’s story was only the beginning of the cracks in the Rourke facade. A few days later, Sienna put me in touch with someone even closer to the core of the family: Rebecca Rourke, Caleb’s estranged older sister.
We met at my apartment. Rebecca looked remarkably like Caleb—the same dark hair and high bridge of the nose—but her eyes carried none of his arrogance. Instead, they reflected years of buried pain.
"I haven't spoken to my parents in five years," Rebecca said, setting a heavy accordion file on my coffee table. "When Caleb started racking up gambling debts in college, my mother forced me to co-sign a forty-thousand-dollar personal loan to save him."
"They made you pay his debts?" I asked, horrified.
"They told me it was my 'family duty,'" Rebecca said, her voice trembling with past rage. "When I refused to co-sign a second mortgage on my own condo years later, my mother told the entire extended family that I was dead to them. She claimed I was mentally unstable and abandoned the family."
Rebecca unzipped the file, revealing years of bank statements, hostile text messages from Dorothea, and legal notices.
"They run that household like a financial cult," Rebecca explained. "My father is a passive accomplice who lets my mother destroy everyone around them as long as his comfort isn't interrupted. Caleb was raised to believe he is royalty who deserves to be funded by the women in his life."
"Why are you giving me all this?" I asked, looking at the mountain of evidence.

"Because Caleb shouldn't get to ruin another woman's life," Rebecca said fiercely. "Use this in court. Prove that there is a documented history of financial abuse and coercion in that family."
For the first time since walking out on my wedding morning, I felt the cold weight of terror lift. I wasn't just defending myself anymore. We were building an unbreakable wall.
