Six months after the wedding that lasted less than a day, the legal decree was signed. The marriage was legally declared null and void—erased as though it had never existed in the eyes of the law.
I stood on the courthouse steps, taking a deep breath of the cool autumn air. I kept my firm, my savings, my apartment, and my name.
Caleb, on the other hand, lost everything.
Without my income to bail them out, the financial house of cards the Rourkes had built collapsed rapidly. The private lender foreclosed on their suburban Connecticut home after they defaulted on the secondary mortgage payments.
Graham was forced to come out of retirement to pay off the wedding vendor lawsuits that Elise helped orchestrate on behalf of the local businesses.
Rumors spread through their country club social circles like wildfire. Once people realized the Rourkes were drowning in debt and legal scandal, the invitations stopped arriving. The wealthy friends they had tried so hard to impress turned their backs completely.
Caleb attempted to land a management role at a local firm, but background checks—now tainted by court filings and public liens—made him unhireable in high-level positions.
I bumped into him once, months later, outside a coffee shop in downtown Hartford. He looked tired, his designer suit replaced by a cheap, rumpled jacket. The arrogant smirk was gone, replaced by a hollow, defeated glare.
