Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

|

The music had barely stopped echo-ing in my ears when reality crashed down. Less than twelve hours ago, I was walking down a flower-draped aisle in an ivory silk gown, believing I was stepping into a lifetime of partnership. Everyone at the reception called it a fairytale. The string quartet, the three-tiered champagne fountain, the glowing crystal chandeliers of the estate—it was all designed to project pure perfection.

"Look at our little architect bride," my mother-in-law, Dorothea Rourke, had purred to the wealthy guests during the toasts. "She builds pretty structures, but now Caleb will build her life."

I had forced a smile then, brushing off her comment as old-fashioned humor. Caleb had squeezed my hand softly under the tablecloth, leaning in to whisper, "Don't take Mom so seriously, babe. She’s just proud of us."

Now, as the harsh morning light cut through the high windows of the Rourke family home in suburban Connecticut, the fairytale felt like a fever dream. My feet were still blistered from hours of dancing. My hairpins dug painfully into my scalp, and my wedding makeup was smudged beneath my tired eyes.

I stood in the guest room, staring at the formal suit jacket Caleb had carelessly thrown over a chair. My suitcase sat by the closet, still zipped shut. I had slept for barely three hours, tossed and turned by a growing knot of anxiety in my stomach.

From downstairs came the clatter of porcelain and metal. I took a deep breath, expecting a quiet morning breakfast with my new husband—a quiet moment to laugh about the crazy night. Instead, a shrill voice rang out from the bottom of the staircase, piercing the morning silence.

"Marina! Get down here now! There is work to be done!"

I froze. That wasn't the tone of a loving family member welcoming a bride. It was the sharp, demanding bark of a master calling a servant. My heart thudded heavily against my ribs as I stepped out into the hallway.
