Chapter 20 - The Unseen File

Late that Friday evening, as the sun set over the city skyline, I sat alone in my private executive suite on the top floor of Vance & Clara International.
The building was quiet. The staff had gone home for the weekend, and Clara was sleeping safely at home with her nanny.
I opened my personal laptop to complete one final security review of our secondary holding accounts in Europe.
As I logged into the encrypted server, a strange, unverified file popped up on my dashboard.
It wasn't a corporate file. It was an automated digital transmission sent from an untraceable server in Zurich.
I clicked on the folder.
Inside was a high-resolution scanned document dated five years ago—two years before Dominic and I ever discussed divorce, and a year before Vale Hospitality took out its first international loan.
It was a trust agreement signed by Victor Vance and an offshore financial syndicate.
My eyes scanned the fine print at the bottom of the page, and my blood ran cold.
The agreement detailed the systematic takeover of my grandfather's silent trust. But it wasn't Dominic who had orchestrated the collapse of Vale Hospitality to steal my inheritance.
Dominic had been a pawn.
The signature at the bottom of the document—authorizing the secret liquidation of my family's assets and placing Dominic in my life six years ago—belonged to Victor Vance.
And attached to the document was a short, typed text message sent from an encrypted Zurich address:

My phone on the marble desk began to vibrate silently in the dark room, displaying an unknown international caller ID.
