That evening, I drove out to the old penthouse where Dominic and I used to live.
The building had been sold off during the liquidation proceedings, and the penthouse was currently being renovated by its new owners.
I stood on the street corner beneath the high-rise tower, looking up at the floor where six months before my daughter's birth, Dominic had placed a folder on the kitchen island and told me our marriage was bad for his image.
The old sign bearing the golden VALE crest had been completely removed from the front entrance, replaced by a sleek, modern glass awning.
My phone rang in my coat pocket. It was Simone.
"Evelyn," Simone said, her voice relaxed and happy. "The final legal transfer for the international holding company just went through. You are officially the sole voting trustee of the entire enterprise."
"No more secondary approvals?" I asked, turning my back on the building.

"None," Simone laughed. "You are the sole authority."
I took a deep breath of the crisp evening air. The pain that had lived in my chest for over a year—the betrayal, the grief, the fear of being left alone with a child—was completely gone. In its place was an unbreakable, quiet strength.
