Chapter 8 - The Grand Reopening

A year after the nightmare at the gala, the city celebrated a very different kind of event.
The Sterling Foundation hosted the grand reopening of the newly completed Richard Sterling Rehabilitation Center for Veterans. It was a massive, state-of-the-art medical facility funded entirely by the money we had seized back from Eleanor's liquidated assets.
The courtyard of the facility was packed with hundreds of people, but this time, it wasn't corrupt politicians and wealthy socialites. It was doctors, nurses, military families, and veterans in wheelchairs who finally had a sanctuary.
I stood on the podium, looking out over the crowd. The bright, warm morning sun washed over my face.
Arthur stood beside me, leaning on his cane, a massive, proud smile stretching across his weathered face.
"My father believed that true wealth was not measured by the numbers in a bank account, but by the lives you could lift up from the dark," I spoke into the microphone, my voice strong and unwavering.
"We faced a darkness that tried to destroy his vision. But because of his strength, and because of the truth, that darkness failed."
I gestured to the massive, beautiful medical center behind me.
"This building stands as a permanent reminder that his legacy is unbreakable. The Sterling Foundation is back, and we will never, ever stop fighting for those who fought for us."

The crowd erupted into a thunderous, genuine standing ovation.
I looked up at the clear blue sky, taking a deep, shuddering breath of absolute, total freedom. The war was officially over. The monsters had been slain, the kingdom had been reclaimed, and I was finally, truly at peace.
