Chapter 15 - The Healing Hands

Months turned into a year of relentless, focused work.
I expanded the foundation's reach, opening three new trauma centers across the state. It was during an inspection of our newest facility that I met Dr. Julian Hayes.
Julian was the lead trauma surgeon for the veteran's ward. He was tall, intensely focused, with kind, intelligent eyes and hands that moved with absolute precision.
I watched him through the glass of the physical therapy room as he patiently, gently helped a young, double-amputee veteran learn to use his new prosthetics.
"He is the best surgeon we have ever hired,"
The facility director whispered to me.
"He works eighty-hour weeks. He actually cares."
Later that afternoon, I bumped into Julian in the staff cafeteria.
"Ms. Sterling,"
Julian smiled, holding a cup of terrible cafeteria coffee.
"I wanted to thank you personally for approving the grant for the new surgical robotics. It's going to change lives."
"You are the one holding the scalpel, Dr. Hayes,"
I replied, feeling a strange, unfamiliar warmth spreading in my chest.
"I just sign the checks."
"You do a lot more than that,"
Julian said, looking at me with a profound, genuine respect that caught me entirely off guard.

"I know what you went through to save this place. You are a warrior in your own right."
It was the beginning of a slow, careful, but incredibly beautiful connection. Julian didn't want my money, and he wasn't intimidated by my power. He saw the scars I carried, and he respected the armor I wore.
