Chapter 1 - The Morning After the Storm

The morning sun broke through the heavy curtains of my apartment, casting a brilliant, warm light across the hardwood floor.
I woke up feeling an exhaustion so profound it settled into my very bones. Every muscle in my body ached from the physical struggle with Eleanor’s guards the night before. My right hand, heavily wrapped in thick white gauze, throbbed with a dull, constant rhythm, a physical reminder of the shattered glass and the violent chaos of the hotel kitchen.
But as I sat up in bed, looking around the small, cramped apartment I had been forced to rent when Eleanor locked me out of my family home, I felt something else.
I felt lighter.
For the first time in six months, the suffocating, terrifying weight of grief and paranoia had been completely lifted from my chest. I didn't have to look over my shoulder anymore. I didn't have to wonder what lie Eleanor was spinning to my father's friends.
The monsters were finally locked in cages, and the key had been thrown away.
My phone, resting on the bedside table, began to buzz violently. It had been ringing non-stop since 6:00 AM.
I picked it up and looked at the screen. The caller ID flashed a name I hadn't seen in months: Arthur Pendelton.
"Good morning, Uncle Arthur," I answered, my voice raspy with sleep.
"Good morning, Scarlett," Arthur’s deep, gravelly voice echoed through the speaker. He sounded energized, completely devoid of the frailty he had exhibited just months prior. "I hope I didn't wake you. We have a war to manage."
"What's happening?" I asked, sitting up straighter and swinging my legs over the side of the bed.
"The FBI hit three of Eleanor’s shell companies at dawn," Arthur reported, his tone practically radiating satisfaction. "Agent Thorne called me ten minutes ago. They froze over thirty million dollars in offshore accounts. The news broke on the local networks twenty minutes later."

I let out a slow, deeply satisfying breath. "And Eleanor?"
"Denied bail," Arthur stated firmly. "The judge took one look at the wiretap transcript where she confessed to murdering Richard, and he remanded her immediately to federal custody. She's not getting out, Scarlett. It's over."
