Chapter 7 - The Trial Commences

Six months later, the federal trial of Eleanor Sterling began.

It was the most highly publicized legal event of the decade. The courtroom was packed with journalists, legal analysts, and a massive crowd of military veterans who had gathered outside the courthouse to demand justice for my father.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit. Arthur sat rigidly beside me.

Eleanor was led into the courtroom wearing a shapeless, faded beige prison uniform. The platinum blonde dye in her hair had grown out, revealing stark, gray roots. The arrogant, untouchable queen of high society was completely gone, replaced by an aging, terrified woman facing the absolute end of her life.

She did not look at me. She kept her eyes glued to the defense table.

The trial was swift and brutal. Agent Thorne took the stand, laying out the massive paper trail of financial crimes with devastating precision.

But the final nail in the coffin was the audio recording from the loading dock.

When the prosecution played the tape in the silent courtroom, Eleanor’s own voice echoed off the wood-paneled walls, bragging about switching my father's medication and watching him die.

Several jurors visibly recoiled in horror. The judge stared at Eleanor with undisguised disgust.

It took the jury less than three hours to return a unanimous verdict.

"Guilty on all charges," the foreperson announced clearly.

The judge didn't hesitate. He sentenced Eleanor to life in federal prison without the possibility of parole.

As the bailiffs clamped the heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists to drag her away, Eleanor finally turned around and looked at me. Her eyes were filled with a desperate, pathetic mixture of hatred and profound defeat.

I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply held her gaze, my face a mask of absolute, unyielding stone, until she was dragged through the heavy wooden doors and out of my life forever.
