Chapter 17 - The Ultimate Closure

"Why are you here, Scarlett?"

Eleanor rasped, her voice rough and bitter, dripping with the venom of a trapped snake.

"Did you come to gloat? Did you come to see the animal in the cage?"

"I didn't come to gloat, Eleanor,"

I replied, my voice completely flat, devoid of any anger, sadness, or empathy.

"I came to look at you one last time."

Eleanor sneered, leaning closer to the scratched, dirty glass.

"You think you won. But every time you walk the halls of that mansion, every time you sit at his desk, you will remember what I did to him. You will never be free of me."

She was desperately trying to wield the only weapon she had left: psychological torture.

I looked at the miserable, broken woman, and I felt absolutely nothing. The fire in my chest that had burned for a year was entirely extinguished.

"You are wrong, Eleanor,"

I said softly, perfectly calm.

"When I sit at his desk, I don't think of you at all. The world has entirely forgotten you. Your daughter washes dirty laundry for minimum wage. Your accomplices are rotting in cells just like yours."

Eleanor’s face twitched, the horrific reality of her absolute irrelevance crashing down upon her.

"I came here today to realize that you are not a monster anymore,"

I continued, placing the phone back onto the receiver with a definitive click.

"You are just a ghost. And I am completely done with you."

I stood up, turned my back on the glass, and walked out of the visitation room, ignoring her frantic, desperate screaming through the thick glass behind me.
